TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) — The Tupelo Police Department honored one of its most dedicated reserve officer volunteers Thursday night at the Athletic League.
The Reserve Officer of the Year Award went to former city councilman Bill Nesmith. Nesmith has worked as a reserve officer since 2006.
Right now, the police department has about 22 reserve officers on staff.
Reserve officers go through a shortened basic training. Their responsibilities vary and include patrolling special events without pay.
Nesmith explains why he volunteers.
“It’s a love I have for the city and the community. When I served on council I got involved in a lot with the police department. It has been a carry over wanting to serve the people and our great city,” said Nesmith.
“We look at dedication and commitment they (reserve officers) put to the division. Overall, the time and going out beyond the call of duty. Reaching out like he (Nesmith) did helping newer officers,” said Reserve Officer Coordinator Eric Gibens.
Last year, reserve officers logged 4,300 hours.
